The ABC of sofa protection

In addition to the basic cleaning at home, your furniture should receive regular maintenance. This applies particularly to the focal point of the modern home, the sofa.

In addition to the basic cleaning at home, your furniture should receive regular maintenance. This applies particularly to the focal point of the modern home, the sofa. Before, sofas were for sitting and watching television, but now they are used for spending time: eating, drinking, playing, relaxing, even sleeping. There are several reasons why you should protect your sofa. Protection stops dirt and moisture from becoming absorbed into the fibres, thus prolonging the sofa’s lifecycle and making it easier to keep it clean. Stains can easily be removed from a protected surface with simple wiping. Vacuuming the sofa is also part of its basic maintenance.

The surface you want to protect must be clean

A sofa should be protected already when it is new, before use. If it is an old one, however, wash it first with Softcare Textile Cleaner, because the surface you want to protect must be clean. To avoid unpleasant surprises, the colour-fastness of the sofa’s surface should be tested on a small, hidden spot before washing. After the test, the solution is sprayed on the soiled surface and left to work for a few minutes, after which it is wiped away using a damp terry cloth. If there are stains on the sofa that cannot be removed with the Textile Cleaner, use Softcare Stain Remover. Spray the solution onto the stain and let work for a few minutes. Rinse the area well by wiping with a soft, damp terry cloth. When removing stains, remember to wipe towards the middle of the stain to avoid spreading it. Finally, fade out the dividing line between damp and dry areas by wiping it with a damp cloth to avoid a “water stain” from forming. Stains should always be removed as quickly as possible.

Protection is quick and easy

Before applying the protector you should consider a few things:

  • The surface receiving the protection must be dry.
  • You should test the colour-fastness of the surface on a hidden area.
  • When using the alcohol-based protector, work in a well-ventilated space.
  • Protect floors during the application.
  • If you accidentally spray too much product on a dark surface, it can leave drip marks. However, these can easily be wiped off with a piece of fabric moistened with the protector.

Furniture Protector is easy to use. The product is sprayed on a dry surface so that the surface becomes evenly moist. The sofa is then left to dry for at least two hours in room temperature, during which the smell of alcohol in the protector will also disappear. Additionally, Softcare has introduced a new water-based Furniture Protector that is odourless. The water-based protector requires a longer wait to work – approximately 24 hours. In normal use, the protection will last for about 3–5 years.

It pays to protect all the home textiles

In addition to furniture, Furniture Protector can also be used to protect curtains and other home textiles. The Softcare product range also includes Carpet Protector, Textile Protector and Leather Protector.
